What is employment law?

Employment law involves a complex combination of Commonwealth legislation, State legislation and the common law. Primarily, the rights and duties of both employees and employers come under the Workplace Relations Act 1996. Other legislation affecting work-place practices include the Commonwealth Sex Discrimination Act 1994, the Racial Discrimination Act 1975, and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. In addition, at a Victorian level, there is the Equal Opportunity Act 1995 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1985.
